Donations of the first day of the Sixth National Campaign to support cancer patients reached YR 685 million. Around 46 cases were supported by businessmen, famous figures and individuals.

Vice President, Abduh Raboh Mansor Hadi, called upon the government and community to extend the campaign and help the people in obtaining medicine.

“Cancer is quite costly to reduce it. It is up to the state to establish the five centers to treat cancer patients in a number of governorates of the republic. The government will work to add 4 billion riyals to 2009 the budget to support those centers,” said Hadi.

Hadi also asked the government to study possibilities of allocating a percentage from mobile services revenues towards efforts of combating the illness, wishing success for the campaign.

The Minister of Public Health and Population, Abdul-Karim Rase, said that the campaign would underline the suffering of the cancer patients and praise the role of the national corporation in offering assistance for these patients. Since its establishment in 2004, the National Center of Caring for Cancer Tumors received 13,000 patients, the minister said, and the Center offers care for 120 cases daily.

Rase added that the Center could not receive the growing number of cases which is the main reason to open further centers in the governorates.

“This campaign will help in one way or another by showing the suffering the disease causes which will encourage people to help patients,” added Rase.

Chairman of the Foundation’s trustee’s council, Abdul Wase Hael Saeed Anam, said the one-month campaign will support cancer patients through establishing two treatment centers in Sana’a and Aden.

Brochures, posters, press reports and TV and radio programs to raise awareness about the disease, its causes and ways to prevent it will be established during the campaign across the Republic.

Some local and Arab well-known figures are taking part in the campaign including Egyptian actress Hanan Turk, UN goodwill ambassador, who arrived in the country on Monday.

The Egyptian actress, Hanan Turk, praised efforts done by media in Yemen in promoting the cause of cancer patients.

Concerning the campaign in raising money for cancer patients, Turk told Saba News agency that the campaign was a success due to the great public response that she saw from the people in Yemen and their tremendous cooperation with the society whether individuals, organizations or private sectors.
