A number of the Yemeni websites including the websites of Yemen TV, 26 September newspaper and Marib Press have been blocked since the beginning of Ramadan Month, September 1, 2008.

The common factor that links these websites is that they all publish prize competitions for the public on the occasion of Ramadan month.

Tens of citizens complained that they could not log into any of the three websites so as to contribute in the competitions and won prizes.

Ahmad al-Najar from Sana’a wondered how other citizens could get into the websites that he could not log into from different internet cafes in the capital.

“I wonder, how can other participants log into the Yemen TV website and win prizes since the beginning of Ramadan while me and all friends I know couldn’t log in, as every time I log in I receive a Network Error. The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time,” said al-Najar.

The manager of 26 September website Mohammed al-Jabiri said that the website is working but in some areas it does not. He said that they have some technical problems with Yemen Net Company and that they have been trying to solve it.

Adel al-Mawri a software engineer at Yemen Net said that the blocking problem is not from their company. He said that these websites are working through foreign hosting companies that have been blocking Yemen Net suspecting it of being a hacker.

He said that the administers of these websites have to communicate with the hosting companies to un-block the four IP’s of Yemen Net so as to overcome this technical problem.

Yemen Observer tried to contact with the Yemen TV but their phones were either busy or not responding.  We tried to log into the three websites but we could not and we received the same message as Mr. al-Najar.  Network error.
