President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Sunday praised UN assistance to support Yemeni development.
During his meeting with Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States Ms. Amat al-Alim Alsoswa and the UN Resident Coordinator/ UNDP Resident Representative in Yemen Ms. Pratibha Mehta, President Saleh praised the current measures of cooperation between Yemen and the UN.
Ms. Alsoswa briefed the President on UNDP aid to Yemen used to overcome the effects of the rainstorms in the governorates of Hadramout and Mahrah, in addition to supporting the government’s efforts to rebuild both governorates as well as Saada.
She expressed her satisfaction with the relief efforts exerted to assist people affected in the three governorates. She indicated UN readiness to implement a program aimed at reinforcing Yemen’s capacity to deal with disasters and crises, as well as supporting programs for the development of local administration and poverty alleviation.
The UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Mehta said that the UN would offer all necessary assistance to bolster current preparations for 2009’s parliamentary elections.
The meeting also reviewed several issues concerning Somali refugees in Yemen, and UN activities related to development and combating poverty.
