Thirty-six participants from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan attended a five-day training course on the role of non-governmental organizations in disseminating and protecting human rights, setting up networks and building regional coalitions. This is in addition to mechanisms for protecting human rights defenders, preparing governmental and non-governmental reports, and the activites of the Human Rights Council, the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the International Criminal Court. They have received practical training on drafting governmental reports on the rights of the child, as well as shadow reports from civil society organization to the Committee for Child’s Rights.
The courses, whose activities finished last Saturday, focused on building the capacities of human rights activists and the media in Gulf States and Yemen, and was organized by the Human Rights Information & Training Center (HRITC), in collaboration with the Foundation for the Future (FFF).
At the closing ceremony, participants said that their participation in the training course helped them learn practical steps for disseminating and defending the concepts of human rights. Participant Mr. Ahmed Hassan Mubarak delivered a speech on behalf of the participants, saying the trainers have provided us with knowledge and skills useful to activists.
For his part, head of the civil society sector at the Supreme National Anti-Corruption Commission Mr. Eazzadin Al- Asbahi, said the course presented a compendium of regional and international experiences in the field of human rights training.” It focused on the role of civil society in preparing human rights reports, and it represented a distinguished experience for a real partnership with the Foundation for the Future in disseminating the concept of human rights” he added. “I am confident the participants will work to promote the values of human rights, and disseminate the concept of democracy” he said.

Mrs. Abeer Dagostani, Program Director of Foundation for the Future in Yemen and the Gulf region is considered one of the remarkable successes of the training course. The interaction of the participants is a reflection of the success of HRITC and civil society institutions in disseminating the concepts of democracy and human rights. “The support for this program, which was implemented by HRITC falls within FFF’s support for civil society initiatives aimed at strengthening the foundations of reform and democracy, and promoting respect for human rights in North Africa and the Middle East she added. It is worth mentioning that this training course is part of the regional program for building the capacities of human rights activists and the media in Yemen and the Gulf States. It was implemented by the HRITC in cooperation with the FFF in order to promote awareness about principals of human rights and democracy, and to strengthen the role of civil society and media institutions.
Included among the trainers were Dr. Nizar Abdul-Kader, the Director of the Geneva Institute for Human Rights in Switzerland; Mr. Ahmed Karud, the Regional Director for Amnesty International in Beirut; Mr. Eazzadin Al-Asbahi member of the Supreme National Anti-Corruption Commission, the head of the civil society sector; Addulhakeem Al-Shargabi, head of the Science and Technology University in Sana’a; Eshraq Al-Maqtari, a trainer and activist in the field of human rights Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, the Regional Representative of the Front Line Protection of Human Rights Defenders; Karima Murshed , the Secretary-General of the National Association of Youth and finally Ahmed Al-Humaidi, the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law at Taiz and international humanitarian law professor.
