The Human Rights Information & Training Center (HRITC) is working on the final arrangements for holding the first regional session in the Arab world on the role of civil society in combating corruption.
This session is being implemented by the HRITC in Yemen in cooperation with the American Beyster Institute’s Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), and is considered the first step in training civil society activists to fight corruption. It emphasizes the importance of building partnerships between civil society organizations and international organizations. The partnership between (HRITC) and the Beyster Institute is an important pioneering experience.
The training program will provide an overview of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, and discuss different methods of combating corruption. In addition, the program will highlight important issues related to fighting corruption, such as the principles of good governance, the ethics of civil society activists, mobilizing civil society organizations, enhancing cooperation and networking among local, regional and international bodies of civil society, and building a national strategy to combat corruption. The program will also include a presentation of national experiences in the Arab region in order to exchange and develop information, a presentation on international anti-corruption campaigns prepared by Transparency International Berlin, and session on preparing reports on fighting against corruption.
The session will be held January 19 in Sana’a with the participation of 35 representatives from civil society organizations in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen.
It is worth mentioning that this session comes as a part of the regional program for combating corruption (Article 13 Group). It is considered the first and the most important coalition in the region in the field of fighting corruption, and is being carried out by the HRITC and Beyster Institute with the support of the Middle East Partnership Initiative, in partnership with the Arab Program for Human Rights Activists in Egypt and the Egyptian Association for Community Participation Enhancement. Also involved are a number of civil society organizations in the Arab world.
