The Dar Al Salam Organization has inaugurated its third event in Yemen, entitled “Developing the Skills of Peace Activists to Confront Extremism and Violence”. The event is being attended by 50 young participants, and aims to reduce the effects of extremism and violence in the community.
A delegation headed by Miss Kimberly Phelan, the Political Officer at the US Embassy, attended the workshop’s opening speech.
This workshop was made possible as a result of the support and the sponsorship of the Embassy of Holland in Sana’a. The embassy is supporting the organization in order to implement the strategies it hopes carry out in the coming five years. The strategies aim to develop the cognitive skills of individuals by helping them identify the dangers of extremism, violent crimes and arms carrying.
It is important to mention that the organization carried out two significant events last January; the first targeted orators in mosques in the poor quarters, and was entitled “The role of religious scholars in confronting extremist education, violent crimes and reducing the negative effects of arms on the community “. The workshop, that was held under the auspices of the Minister of Endowments at the Organization’s headquarters, was attended by 50 religious scholars from different quarters of Sana’a. The second event was held in the Culture House under the auspices of the Minister of Culture, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. It was entitled “The role of younger generations in combating extremism”, and targeted 100 schools in order to create a new generation with a high level of humanitarian awareness. These courses seek to produce people who are able to take his/ her responsibilities seriously, and handle skillfully the pressing national and human issues, including the escalation of extremist ideologies, revenge and arms carrying.
The organization has planned a further 15 activities for 2009, with similar aims to those already carried out.
