Oil companies working in Yemen refuse to open their account books for Yemen's EITI council

There is a crisis in Yemen National Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Council that oil companies working in Yemen are reluctant to open their accounts and payments, said Dr.Sa'addien Bin Taleb, head of international Cooperation at the Supreme National Authority for Combating Corruption (SNACC).


He said that oil companies in Yemen have a strong pressure on the government and on other sides to prevent the opening of their account books.
Bin Taleb called for a wider representation for civil society organizations in Yemen EITI Council which he expected that they will play a big role in enhancing transparency in the council.


Yemen was accepted as an EITI Candidate country on 27 September 2007 and has until 9 March 2010 to undertake Validation.Yemen announced its formal commitment to implement the EITI following a Cabinet Decree in March 2007 and the Ministry of Oil and Minerals has been designated as the focal point for coordinating the implementation of this initiative.


The Ministry of Oil and Minerals, Government of Yemen, established the mutli-stakeholder National EITI Council with a separate YEITI Secretariat.  The aim of this council is to monitor and facilitate the EITI implementation process by taking the necessary decisions and ensuring necessary support to fulfill the EITI work plan.

This came in a meeting that SNACC held with the network of civil society to workout a mechanisms of cooperation in fighting corruption. Bin Taleb said that there is an open channel between SNACC and civil society organization network to exchange information and promote successful examples in the field of combating corruption.
