Ministry of oil and minerals and the British company BMT signed an agreement for preparing environmental policies and standards as well as to study and evaluate the environmental effect in all productive petroleum sectors in Yemen, last Monday, at the Ministry of Oil and Minerals in Sana’a.
The agreement that was signed by minister of oil and mineral Amir Salem al-Aydarous and the general director of the British company Stewart Hume included the legislative and technical systems and frameworks through preparing a general environmental policy and a specific policy for the oil and gas sectors. The agreement also stipulated preparing a monitoring, executive legislative bylaw and a national strategy for the integrated administration, establishing a data base for the accompanying waste and chemical substances, setting up environmental policies for purifying and treating the accompanied water of during the exploration process.
The agreement also included the evaluations of the current environmental impact of the oil and gas activities as well as surveying, classifying, categorizing, and processing the accompanied chemical substances and waste in a way that match with the concepts of the cleanest production and industrial ecology. The agreement also included preparing and executing training and qualification programs in the environment and profession safety spheres.
Following the signing on the agreement Minister of oil told reporters that the agreement aimed at setting up a finite national matrix for processing the chemical and waste substances that accompany the process of exploring and producing oil and gas as well as providing comprehensive consultation concerning ways of executing the environmental and social impact of high standards in both land and sea and preparing plans and strategies for treating wastes and preparing a national policy in this regard.
He added that the agreement came in the frame of executing the instructions of the president of the republic Ali Abdullah Saleh for protecting the environment in the exploring and producing oil and gas and to work for executing projects that contribute in developing the local communities.
