As part of its technical cooperation plan for its Third Country Training Program, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is going to train 115 Yemeni officials in various fields related to health, water, irrigation, marine & fisheries, and electricity during the year 2009, stated a press release issued by JICA.
The Third Country Training Program (TCTP) is one of JICA’s overseas training programs that is conducted in mid-level countries by organizations and personnel who have participated in Japanese technical cooperation and can provide training services to people of neighboring countries based on their development experience. With this training program, JICA intends to share Japanese knowledge and technologies with more people, and to create an environment of shared language, culture and climate. The program will also create more opportunities for cooperation between developing countries.
On May 31, 2009 JICA sent 20 officials from the Ministry of Public Health and Population to Egypt to receive training on the subject of women’s health in Yemen. Through the training, which lasted almost a month and a half, the participants acquired the necessary knowledge and experience concerning reproductive health, health care delivery, and feeding and nutrition during pregnancy and lactation. They also received training related to communication skills, health education and quality planning and improvement.
On October 4, 2009 JICA also sent 10 instructors from the Marine Technical Institute in Aden to Tunisia to receive training on marine mechanics and marine electricity until October 30, 2009. This training program is intended to enhance the capacity of fisheries in Yemen through the training of 28 Yemeni instructors, divided into three groups, at the Center of Fisheries Vocational Training in Mahdia, Tunisia.
On October 10, 2009 JICA is planning to dispatch a second group, made up of 20 engineers from different agencies of the Ministry of Water & Environment, to Egypt to be trained on water resource management until November 5, 2009. This training program aims to build Yemeni water agencies’ experience regarding groundwater modeling, design of water networks, water quality and health effects, hydrological design of water tanks, geographical information systems, and remote sensing, as well as operations and maintenance.
In October and November of this year, JICA is also going to send three groups of 45 engineers from various irrigation and water organizations in Yemen to Jordan to receive training on high efficiency irrigation technologies, water harvesting, spate irrigation, and surface and groundwater monitoring technologies, with the purpose of addressing the water scarcity issue in Yemen.
JICA is also going to send a fifth group of 20 engineers from the Public Electricity Corporation to Jordan this month. There they will receive training on power generation and maintenance in order to develop human resources in the electrical sector of Yemen.
