YEMEN - About 350 participants, including cardiac surgeons and other medical experts, gathered at the 7th Yemeni Cardiac Conference held in the coastal city of Mukalla, the capital of Hadramout, last week to look at ways to combat and manage cardiovascular diseases.
For three days, the participants alternately gave or listened to a number of presentations and participated in one panel discussion which examined the main causes of cardiovascular diseases as well as possible treatments.
Dr. Rifa'at Basouriah, the chief medical organizer, told Yemen Observer that the significance of the conference lies in the attendance of experienced cardiac specialists from inside and outside Yemen. Doctors from Canada, Italy, the United States, Germany, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the U.A.E., exchanged knowledge and experiences with the local doctors.
For the local organizers from the Hadramout, the primary goal of the conference was to come out with strong recommendations for establishing a cardiac center in the Hadramout. The conference was a success in this regard, as Dr. Abdullah al-Jufri, the Vice President of Hadramout University of Science and Technology, announced that his university will be establishing a cardiac center which will be funded by Kuwait.
“The local medical cadre greatly benefited from the conference; they were able to learn from the experience of the guests and from the presentations that were given,” Dr. Rifa'at said. He added that in addition to the conference, a workshop on cardiopulmonary resuscitation was arranged for emergency room personnel.
“Through establishing rapport with the visiting experts, we were hoping to get donations for children who suffer from cardiovascular diseases. We also attempted to open communication channels with international specialized centers. By organizing a conference like this in Hadramout, it should enable us to hold similar conferences in the future,” Dr. Rifa'at explained.
The Cardiac Conference was sponsored by the Khailah Bougshan Development Association, in cooperation with Hadramout University and the Yemeni Cardiac Society.
