Yemen will join the WTO this year, al-Mutawakel

YEMEN - The Minister of Industry and Trade Yahya al-Mutawakel announced on Wednesday the signing of a bilateral agreement with Canada for Yemen to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).
 
The signing of the agreement came following a three-year negotiation to be set the fourth one beside the European Union, China, and Australia within the framework of Yemen bilateral negotiations to finalize accession requirements.
 
The agreement, signed Wednesday in Geneva, includes tables of commitments setting ceilings of customs tariffs of goods items which negotiations revolved over within the commercial ties between the two countries.
 
The agreement was signed by Yemen ambassador to the European Headquarters of the UN Organizations Ibrahim al-Adoufi and the Canadian ambassador to the WTO John Gero.
 
The minister considered this signed agreement an important addition to obtain the full membership of the WTO end of the current year.
 
The Republic of Yemen and World Trade Organization (WTO) held the 7th talks session on Yemen accession into the organization in Geneva during 25-27 January.
 
Al-Mutawakel announced after this talk that, “signing the agreement to join Yemen to the World Trade Organization (WTO) will be achieved during this year 2010.”
 
Upon his arrival to Sana’a after his participation in the seventh round of WTO in Geneva, al-Mutawakel said that Yemen and the WTO have agreed on a timeframe to the accession of Yemen into the WTO in 2010.
 
The WTO eighth work group is to be convened in July to complete the bilateral agreements and the pending issues, he said.
 
The minister said that he held, on the sidelines of the WTO seventh round meetings, bilateral meetings with the negotiating countries, topped by the United States, European Union, Canada, Japan and South Korea.
 
The meetings discussed supporting each country to Yemen’s accession to the organization soon.
