An al-Qaeda suspect has been recaptured after shooting two guards and briefly escaping from his room in al-Gumhori hospital in Sana'a on Sunday.
The failed escape comes three days after authorities announced they had arrested 11 alleged al-Qaeda members in raids across the capital.
It is not yet known how many people had been injured in the clash, but reports say that the detainee killed an intelligence agent guarding his room after snatching the guard's gun while serving him lunch meal.
The suspect was believed to be a German of a Somali origin and was captured during a raid targeted al-Qaeda cell during which a person was killed and 11 were arrested three days before the hospital incident.
Witnesses said they seen the man surrendering after a gun battle with police.
witness said there was exchanges of fire between him and the police of the hospital which continued, according to eye witnesses, for almost half an hour .
Anti terror unit personnel managed to storm the room where he was by firing tear gas, and the room was seen to be burning.
Witnesses said they saw the gunman raising his hands and surrendering.
The al-Gumhori hospital receptionist answered Yemen Observer phone call but she couldn’t say nothing except crying and screaming "blasts blasts, they are fighting, please rescue us" .
An unnamed hospital source told the Reuters news agency that the man took a gun from one of two guards in his room where he was being treated and opened fire, wounding both, before trying to make his way downstairs, where more fighters opened fire at the entrance before escaping.
