The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has allocated a grant of $35 million for the implementation of fishery projects across Yemen's coasts.
The grant appeared in a memorandum signed by the Minister of Fisheries Mohamed Shamlan and the Yemen Portfolio Manager at the IFAD Omer Zafar last Wednesday in Sana'a.
The IFAD's grant aims to improve the livelihood of fishermen and create job opportunities for poor fishermen in the coastal regions. It also aims to assist fishermen in applying international standards of fish quality to their work.
Following the signing, Shamlan stressed the importance of projects to be implemented within the grant program which will complete the infrastructure of the fish sector along the coastlines in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
The most important of those projects were the establishment of water-breaks and landing sites, jetties, auction centers, fish storage facilities and other vital projects needed to the development of fish production.
Well-known international companies including the British Walling Ford firm and Dome Company based in Dubai finished research studies for constructing 5 water breaks and jetties on the coastal areas 3 of them in Luhaya, Salif, and Ras al-Ara, on the Red sea and 3 others in al-Hami, Gusaier, and Qishin in the Arabian sea.
Shamlan values the IFAD's steady support in developing the fisheries sector and enhancing its role in ensuring the food security and supporting the national economy.
Furthermore, Shamlan affirmed his ministry's keenness to facilitate the procedures of implementation of those projects included in the grant, so as to improve the economic conditions of the fishermen and create job opportunities in the coastal provinces.
For her part, the IFAD's representative in Yemen Fathia Bahran said that recent studies conducted by IFAD revealed a decline in numbers of some fish species of economic value, a matter which requires implanting programs and plans to preserve those species.
