The singles tennis for participants 35 years and older ended this Sunday with the winning of Basil Al-Komaity to his opponent Faisal al-Sabbahy, 2 sets for nothing.
The category of men’s single over 35 consisted of 32 player, including non-Yemenis like Matahiro and Takahachi from Japan, Arnor and Sergy from Russia, Carlos Alba from Bolivia and Naji Younes from Lebanon.
“Four things I never leave behind: my passport, computer, credit card and tennis racket,” said Carlos Alba. Alba is a Bolivian lives in Canada and work as a private consultant. “I think this tournament is a great success but it missed the female categories singles and doubles,” Alba added. There were three female participants who have great potentials and need support to develop themselves. Alba also said that strength alone is not enough, but the technique and the brain are important, and thinks that Yemeni females can represent Yemen in international tournaments.
Yemeni women players also participated in this tournament, yet it was very limited participation. The females played only in the mixed category, and there was no separate category for women. Buthaina al-Olofi, 13 years old, has been playing tennis for two years. “I have met tough opponents, but my sister Shayma’a was the toughest among them,” said Buthaina. Buthaina had a lot of encouragment and support from her family and the women’s union.
Today the category of men’s Singles Open will play Simi-final will start with the French player Mathew vs. Ghassan al-A’nsi, and Fahed Shamsaldeen vs. Ossama al-Maqalih at the Sheraton hotel. The men’s singles open started with 40 players.
This competition came within the fourth MTN tennis open tournament held in the Sheraton Hotel in Sana’a and sponsored by MTN-Yemen, and the tournament included a variety of tournament categories.
