The opening ceremony of the Khadija Entrepreneurship Training and Business Incubation Program was held this Tuesday at the Youth Leadership Development Foundation (YLDF).
“Behind each successful woman there is a great man,” echoed the slogan for the program, sponsored by the Silatech Foundation and the Small and Micro Enterprise Promotion Services (SMEPS). The programmed aimed to encourage the creativity of Yemeni youth, while assisting women to become pioneers in the business world. It also taught teamwork, affairs development and communication improvement between successful businesspersons.
Chairperson of the YLDF Dr. Intlaq al-Motwakil welcomed the guests, assuring the constant and maintained support for the young businesspersons of Yemen. Intlaq also thanked Her Highness Mozah Bint Nasser al-Missned, the wife of the Emir of Qatar, for the support represented by the Silatech initiative and the social development fund.
The Khadija training program will continue for one year, where 200 participants will go through four phases of training. First the participating youth will follow international labor organizations for a period of three months. Following this, the participants will develop their own projects and will qualify to manage these projects by taking classes in business administration for four months. Finally, the execution of the project remains under the supervision of a panel of experts for six months. The three best projects will receive a prize of $2,000.
“Silatech was founded in January of 2008 by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al-Missned of Qatar in order to address the critical need to create jobs and opportunities for young people across the Arab World,” said Mohammed al-Maitamy, the representative of the Silatech Initiative in Yemen. He added, “Silatech has a unique vision regarding youth. It is about assisting youth, enabling them to have the chance to live honorably through the participation of building their communities.” Al-Maitamy also assured those concerned that Yemen is one of the leading initiative countries.
Nawaf Alassi al-Mejlad, a minister and the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Qatari Embassy, stressed the importance of these types of projects in Yemen. Al-Mejlad confirmed that Qatar is supporting development programs in Yemen, which will qualify the labor forces in Yemen for the Arab Gulf market.
Two participants from one of the participating teams, Asia Ahmed and Arwa Ahmed, expressed their feelings, Asia felt that participation within the project was an excellent way to build one’s future, but to collectively achieve the goals of the project built a country. Arwa agreed, adding that with the assistance of the Khadija program they were now able to translate their ideas into practical procedures.
Another team explained the reasons they joined Khadija. “We wanted to change ourselves first so we could change our society,” said Mohammed Yasin, a second year student in business administration. His teammate Hanan Hadi, a young clothes designer, added, “we discussed our ideas and we reached an understanding of what we wanted to do. The result was the idea of creating a new brand that we hope will be known the world over. We want to call it Glamorous.”
Safa Rawiah, the YLDF program manager, explained the standards maintained while evaluating the projects. The idea of the project, along with the location and cost for the entirety of the project remained a hot button issue. Likewise, the compatibility of the team members remained key, as they will be partners for the length of the project.
