Yemen - A number of militants attacked the political security building and the general security building in Zinjubar town, capital of Abyan province early morning on Wednesday, said security sources.
Eye witnesses said that at least five people were killed and several others wounded in the attack on the political security building. Among the killed were two women working for the political security.
One more person was killed and another wounded in the attack on the general security building.
The attackers who were masked and riding motorcycles fired machineguns, grenades and RBGs at the two separate buildings and clashed for an hour with the security forces before they ran away heading to Ja’ar district the strong hold of the Islamic extremists. A security source said they arrested 7 of the attackers that he believed are al-Qaeda affiliates.
While writing the news, 11:40 Sana’a local time, the operation unit of the political security in Abyan responding to a phone call from Yemen Observer said they were busy resisting the attackers whom he said were still attacking the building. “We are busy, don’t bother us,” said the operation unit worker before he closed the phone.
The security source blamed al-Qaeda of being behind the attack.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula had announced accountability of a similar attack targeted the political security building in Aden that resulted in killing 14 people on June 19.
