Hodeida floods leave 40 dead and roads ruined

 Floods that swept through Hodeida have left 40 dead, five of them in al-Maroa’a area, due to drinking water contamination.
 
A local source in Hodeida said that the early intervention of the health teams succeeded in controlling the environmental damages that would have led to a disaster. The intervention prevented further deaths according to officials.
 
Al-Jarahi Directorate has seen the majority of their deaths due to rains. There were reports of a single death attributed to a lightning strike and thirteen others drowning as a result of floods.
 
Among the 34 people killed by the floods in the directorate, 11 of them were in Zahra Directorate, 9 in al-Kanawis and one at the border of al-Tahtia and Khokha Directorates.

 
Local statistics said that among the 400 houses which are totally or partially destroyed in the floods at the devastated directorates, 50 were in Zhara Governorate, 230 in al-Kanawis, 100 in Hais  and 10 in Khokha Directorate.
 
Al-Llawia - al-Dorihimi road which is 20 kilometers long is almost completely destroyed because of the inadequate drainage channels established according to the General Secretary of the Dorihimi local Council Mohammed Hibatallah Sharim.
 
Hodeida – Aden costal road was damaged at al-Haima area in al-Tahtia Directorate. Other roads were also damaged in Jabal Ras Directorate in addition to Hodeida – Haradh road at al-Kanawis area. Hodeida- Taiz road at Hais area, al-Mansoria – Al-Manasra road at al-Wa’aria as well as Zabid – Al-Faza  roads  were also damaged.
 
In addition to the damages above the floods washed away a number of cars and trucks and caused damages to the contents of a number of houses and shops, agricultural crops, agricultural soil and their traditional barriers as well as the high mortality among livestock.
 
President Ali Abdullah Saleh ordered the formation of a committee to enumerate the floods damages   in  Hodeida and to submit them to the cabinet in order to address damages.
 
The Minister of Public Works and  Roads Omer Abdullah al-Kurshumi together with Hodeida Governor Ahmed Salem al-Jabali  inspected Saturday the conditions of the devastated villages at al-Zahra Directorate.

 
Al-Kurshumi and al-Jabali heard a report from al-Zahra General Director Abdurrahman al-Rifaie’ over the damages of the directorate’s villages and measures taken to alleviate suffering.
 
The General Director said that services were provided to 557 families which were affected by the floods. Tents and food items were provided by al-Saleh Foundation and release materials were provided by the Yemeni Red Crescent.
 
Minister al-Kurshumi and Governor al-Jabali inspected the damages on the al-dorihimi – al-lawia road which has washed away in the floods.

The Minister of Public Works directed the Yemeni Economic Corporation to speed up the restoration works for infrastructure damaged by the floods and to assess the damages and submit them to the General Corporation for Roads to take technical measures.

The Governorate’s General Director of Public Work office Saleh Hamid Sharaf, said that the length affected was about 10 kilometers out of the total length of the road which is 35 kilometers, with an estimated cost of YR 150 million.
