Malaysian Police arrested a 21-year-old Yemeni in possession of over 30kg of qat leaves at a taxi stand in Changlun town on Monday.
State police chief Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said following a tip-off, the youth, a student at a private college in Kuala Lumpur was arrested while trying to board a taxi on Monday afternoon.
“He was carrying two bags containing 199 tins of fresh qat leaves weighing 30kg. The street value of the leaves was estimated between RM40 and RM50 per kilo.
According to the state police chief, the early investigations showed that the suspect brought the plants into the country via the Malaysia-Thailand border and it is believed that he would have distributed them to his college mates in Kuala Lumpur.
On March 8, Customs Department narcotics officers seized qat plants valued at RM3,000 at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s free zone cargo area. The qat was brought in by several Yemenis for their own consumption.
“We’re still investigating to see whether the foreigner is associated with the local taxi driver.” state police chief said.
Changlun is a main border town in Kedah, Malaysia. It is located in the district of Kubang Pasu, about 42 km north from Alor Star and 8 km near Bukit Kayu Hitam.
