Although the poorest country of the Arabic Peninsula Yemen fell like many other countries in the region under the spell of cosmetic surgery, making beauty and perfection that much more obtainable.
Doctor Saeed Alkershy who runs Sana’a C-plac clinic told our reporter that his medical institution ran two different types of plastic surgery operations: - Reconstructive - Cosmetic Reconstructive Surgery Reconstructive surgery is used to correct abnormal structure or improve functions.
However, most people in Yemen due to poverty and a lack of awareness do not generally have access to such treatment, only reserved to a privileged few.
Doctor Alkershy said that if it wasn’t for private donors as well as local and international NGOs most patients requiring reconstructive surgery would have to go without, enduring lifelong disabilities or disfigurements. The doctor stressed that along with many things in Yemen a lack in awareness and often social fear prevented patients from accessing care in time.
Cosmetic surgery Cosmetic surgery is performed to improve one’s appearance and involves reshaping parts of the body that function properly. In Yemen, it is mostly women who require such “modifications to their physical appearance”.
Since vanity knows no borders, the usual “culprit” is to blame, the need to attain physical perfection and comply with modern beauty standards. Social pressure and the fear of the ridicule keep men usually away.
All doctors in Yemen have to comply with a code of ethic which requires physician to ensure that their patients do not suffer from psychological impairments. Although financially unattainable to the majority of Yemenis, cosmetic surgery in Yemen remains much cheaper than in other countries of the region.
