UN Special envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar visited Yemen last Saturday to follow up on the implementation of the recent Security Council resolution - 2015 - and political development in accordance with the GCC initiative.
Benomar disclosed that he was preparing a new report for the Security Council, scheduled for July 17.
In his meeting with Yemeni President Abdu Rabbo Mansour Hadi, Benomar said, “The UN Security Council decided unanimously, in an unprecedented way on the need to assist Yemen and to confirm and devote the will of the international community to the importance of getting Yemen out of the crisis and the difficult circumstance it is in, as to the promote peace, harmony, development and growth.”
He explained that there will be some serious and vigorous actions made to support the political settlement based on the GCC initiative and its implementation mechanism as Yemen needed to resume its political transition. The diplomat insisted that national dialogue was paramount.
During a separate meeting on Saturday with Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi, the UN envoy to Yemen said that the national dialogue is the backbone of the political process reaffirming the commitment of the United Nations to stand by Yemen to overcome the current challenges.
Benomar is due to meet with political parties, governmental and non-governmental, to work on supporting the preparation of the national dialogue.
The Yemeni president pointed that the will of the international community “is interpreted through the success of the political settlement in Yemen and to not let slip to the maze of loss, disruption and war,” stressing the importance of “concerted efforts at national, regional and international levels so as to create an appropriate atmosphere for the comprehensive National Conference “ that will draw according to Hadi set “the parameters of good governance and the modern civil state that is based on justice, equality and freedom.
“ Moreover, al-Qirbi confirmed his country’s intention to “moving towards completing the implementation of the GCC initiative and its executive mechanism which would lead to Yemen reaching safety,” praising the role played by the United Nations in supporting the political process in Yemen.
