Rain damages parts of Historical Great Mosque of Zabid in west of Yemen

Heavy rains swept the city of Zabid recently causing the collapse of fourth corridor of the historic Great Mosque of Zabid building and threatening its total collapse. The historic landmark dates back to the era of Bani Ziad dynasty in the middle of the eighth century.

Conservation Assembly for Historical Monuments in Zabid has warned on Sunday of risks to the mosque, which may lead to its collapse. It also expressed its concern that  the damages caused by rain might reach the stores of historical and Islamic manuscripts that are preserved in this historical and Islamic mosque.  

The Assembly appealed to the political leadership and government represented by the Ministry of Endowments and Guidance and the Ministry of Culture and all concerned authorities and international and Islamic organizations to maintain the historical monuments and save the historical Great Mosque in Zabid, and to luanch an emergency campaign for its restoration.

They also refered to the deterioration and collapse facing the mosque because of heavy rainfall witnessed by the city that lasted two hours leaving significant damage in the mosque.

The damage was the collapse of fourth corridor with all its contents of wooden inscriptions and magnificence beauty floral ornaments, which is now submerging in rain water inside the mosque that is also sunken on water. The laso said that most of its carpet and   contents have been damaged. The source also reported cracks in other corridors of the mosque that threaten its total collapse.

In a statement, the assembly called for adopting serious measures to preserve the components of the mosque and its architecture characteristics and its contents of precious historical manuscripts.

Minister of Endowments and Guidance, Hamoud Ubad, said on Sunday that the ministry formed engineering committee and dispatched it to the city of Zabid to assess the damages of the Great Mosque and to urgently report back to the ministry.

Ubad stressed that the ministry will address the damages of the historical Great Mosque promptly and will protect this Islamic history facility from any damage.
