“A Yemeni intelligence official has accused Iran with supporting an espionage cell in Aden”, according to the Turkish Anatolian News Agency - “Espionage” is a crime under the legal code of many nations, including Yemen. The risks of espionage vary. A spy breaking the host country’s laws may be deported, imprisoned, or even executed in some cases.

Anatolian news quoted a Yemeni intelligence officer, Najeeb al-Badwi, as saying that the members of the ring are “Yemenis including four persons from Saada and other members from the Southern Movement.”

Badwi said that the security authorities hunted the cell that rented an apartment overlooking the Saudi consulate in Aden. Leading some to suspect the Iranians were in fact spying on the Saudis.

He further revealed that leaders and journalists of the Southern Movement visited Tehran and Saaada and received training programs in the art of “espionage.” Espionage or spying involves a government or individual obtaining information that is considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information.

Espionage is inherently clandestine, as it is taken for granted that it is unwelcome and, in many cases illegal and punishable by law.
