Al-Anad military base received a new batch of U.S. marines and sophisticated military equipment on Saturday, military sources said.
A military aircraft landed at Aden International Airport from Sana’a at 5.15 pm, carrying U.S. soldiers and armored vehicles. It took off after ten minutes of landing to the al-Anad military base, where it unloaded its cargo.
This is the third time in a month that a U.S. military aircraft has landed at al-Anad base where the base is experiencing increased activity.
A security official said that U.S. military experts arrived earlier last year to oversee the covert operations of U.S. intelligence in their fight against terrorism, according to local news website baraqesh.net.
He pointed out that the U.S. established the base as a result of the state’s weakened influence in the south.
It was an opportunity to establish a military base to serve as the launch station for U.S. aircraft to carry out attacks against elements of al-Qaeda in several provinces, notably Abyan, Marib and the capital. Dozens of civilians have been killed in attacks, since early last year.
Al-Qaeda has strengthened its activity in the vicinity of al-Anad, where it was exposed for several bombing attempts, most recently a medium-range missile fired a few meters from the base.
