The fourth edition of Yemen Today is now out in circulation.  With its growing popularity it is quickly becoming Yemen’s preeminent source of news and current events. “We started with 6,000 copies and four issues later are at well over 15,000 copies. We are rapidly expanding and we are trying to meet the demands,” says managing consultant and editor, Julie de Pimodan.

The magazine follows a similar format to Newsweek, with news briefs, a hot spot section, in-depth news analysis as well as editorials by leading professionals in their respective fields. It is an interesting look at the current events of Yemen with the latest issue having a special section dedicated to Yemeni tourism.  The report looks into not only the potential of the market, but also at some of the challenges facing the tourism industry, whilst featuring some of the movers and shakers of the  industry and their opinions on how we might rectify these problems.

Being the only magazine in Yemen that offers a combination of Yemeni news, culture and special interest features all in one place, it has been quick to find an audience. “It is an excellent idea,” says Mr. Assaf Maakaroun, general manager of Yemen Catering Services. “An English language magazine that covers all aspects of Yemeni life; politics, business, society and so forth.” According to Ms. de Pimodan, their goal is simple; to play a role in relaying Yemen as it is - a country undergoing transition. “We are here to report it,” says publisher and editor-in-chief, Faris Sanabani.

With stories such as “Arms Ban in Yemen”, a piece asking us “Do We Read Enough?” and an eye opening story tackling the issues of Yemen’s rapid population growth, it is easy to see why Yemen Today is becoming so popular with readers. “Yemen Today aims to be the pioneer news magazine in Yemen, informing the resident expat as well as the international community about the country’s news and current affairs, investments and politics,” says the magazine’s managing editor, Mr. Mohammed al-Asaadi.

Considering its dedication to being a one-stop shop for news in Yemen, it is no surprise that most 4 and 5 star hotels are providing copies of Yemen Today to their guests. Yemenia Airways, Qatari Airways and Turkish Airlines have also begun distributing Yemen Today on-board and it looks as though soon you will be able to pick up a copy on any in or outbound flights through Sana’a on Emirates.  Locally, it is sold in supermarkets and newsstands around Sana’a and can also be found in most upscale restaurants.
