Yemeni daily life captured in art

Personal experiences and the contours of Yemeni life were depicted in an art exhibition held last Sunday, July 6 at the Yemeni Cultural House.  Four Yemeni artists took part in this exhibition, each with their own style of drawing and painting through which they captured the rhythms of daily Yemeni life. The exhibition consisted of around 51 pictures drawn by four Yemeni artists, Mohammed al-Yamani, Ali al-Mabri, Moubark al-Seloua’ and Ali al-Qata’. 

“One feels very happy when one sees such pictures that promote the Yemeni life and the environment where those artists live,” said Abu Baker al-Maflihi, Minister of Culture. “All pictures displayed here reflect both suffering and hope that artists feel in their normal lives.” 

The youth is the hope of our country, and the ones that will improve it by their hard work and determination, added al-Maflihi. He enthused that Yemeni fine arts are developed and capable of entering competitions with not only Arab fine arts, but at the level of international fine arts. 

Many visitors of the exhibition praised fine arts in Yemen, such as Walid al-Zabedi, who said “every time I visit a fine arts exhibition, I become amazed because I realize how quickly Yemeni fine art are developing.”  He also said that when he saw the exhibited pieces, he could not come up with words to describe them. “Yemeni art is really on its way to become world-famous,” he said. Other people commented that Yemeni artists should dedicate their work to raising social and humanitarian issues that would educate people. “I hope that artists begin to draw and paint about serious social issues that would do something for the community.  For example, why artists do not paint about the growing problem of drug-abuse in Yemen?,” said Abdl-Elah al-Hadi, a pharmacist, pointing out that this habit damages the health of so many people who are not educated about the repercussions.
