Schoolgirls show off traditional Yemeni folk dresses.
As part of their summer camp’s activities the girls of al-Nizari school displayed 32 different folkloric dresses representing the 22 governorates of Yemen.

The girls took part in the Sana’a Summer Tourism Festival and displayed their beautiful folkloric dresses in five occasions since the beginning of the festival, which started on July 17 and will last until August 18.

The girls displayed their dresses for the first time during the carnival that inaugurated the festival, marching from Bab al-Yemen in the Old City of Sana’a to al-Tahreer square.

Then they displayed their traditional dresses for the public and tourists every Tuesday afternoon in al-Sabeen Park. Thousands of people admired the idea of displaying the Yemeni folkloric dresses and some of the audience donated their districts’ special folkloric dresses so as to be displayed.

The Principal of al-Nizari school, Fathia Hameed al-Deen, said that the success of their project encouraged her and the school to document all the Yemeni folkloric dresses. She added that they intend to publish a book that includes all folkloric dresses of all districts in Yemen when they find any organization that is willing to fund their project.

The 13-year-old female poet Saba Badi who also took part in the displays, said that she was proud that she and her mates will be honored by the Ministry of Tourism on the coming Sunday for the great efforts paid by al-Nizari girls’ school’s work. She said that she has been working on a poem about the activity and will read it in the honoring ceremony.
