Losing one of your parents is a very difficult experience . But being an orphan who is in need of other people’s help and kindness is something even more complicated. There are many reasons that explain why children become orphans; one of them is war, which kills many people leaving children alone without a family they can depend on and feel safe with.

Many countries pay more attention to this category of children as a way to help them overcome difficulties. In Yemen, many orphanages are funded for those children. There are around 30 orphanages in Yemen: 10 of them are governmental, 17 belong to the private sector, and 3 are both governmental and part of the private sector according to the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, Amat al-Razzaq Humad.

One of these orphanages is Al-Rahmah Foundation for Human Development (RFHD), which has expanded its activities for both female and male orphans in order to improve their conditions.

“The expanding of the foundation aims at including males and females of all governorates and not only from Sana’a, thus offering children training services in order to equip them with skills and to improve their abilities,” said the director of RFHD, Roqayah al-Hariri.

Media can be effective in the promotion of problematic issues as well as in reuniting efforts for actions to be done. In other words, media can also help orphanages to obtain more funding from donors. Minister of Information, Hassan Lozi said that he and all those who work in media will make the media to highlight the activities of charities in order to encourage those who would like charities to carry on doing their good duties to help both, poor people and orphans.

Lozi admired the activities carried out by RFHD for the sake of orphans, in particular orphan girls in Yemen who really are in need of help.

“I am encouraged by what I saw and I feel assured that charitable work is a creative force within our society and not just a source of breeding, protecting and providing an immunity model,” said Lozi while he visited RFHD.

He stressed that humanitarian work no matter how small or big, it is a great contribution, and he encouraged everyone to accomplish the noble goals and objectives which we as Muslims should fulfill.

Al-Hariri said that the visiting of the Minister of Information to RFHD contributes to activating the role of the media in relation to humanitarian issues.

The Yemeni government also tries to help orphans. For example, the Social Care Fund (SCF) supports these children in different ways. Amat al-Razzaq Humad confirmed that the SCF presents all types of free of charge health services and exempts of school duties to one million orphans all over Yemen at a total amount of YR 4.5 billion. In addition to this, it gives loans to Yemeni orphan families for the improvement of living conditions and in order to facilitate their incorporation in the society.

Humad also mentioned the inauguration on Tuesday of the World Symposium on the Care and Habilitation of the Orphan, emphasizing the distinguished partnership between her ministry and civil society organizations in the care and rehabilitation of orphans. She also stressed the importance of monitoring tasks by civil society organizations in this regard.

The minister pointed out the increase in the number of orphanages, which reached 30 orphan houses as mentioned above, all of them offering care and health services as well as education to Yemeni orphans.

Humad explained that the symposium aims at highlighting the importance of the training and qualification for the orphans, so that they can contribute to achieve sustainable development, integration and partnership of orphans among governmental and non-governmental establishments and organizations, locally, regionally and internationally.

It is worth mentioning that the first activity of the 1st World Forum for the Orphan was launched in Sana’a. In that occasion, the Orphan Foundation gave an honoring party to 35 orphans who were interested in various religious, cultural, scientific, literary and professional areas.
