Sheffield’s Weston Park Museum featured on Wednesday an art festival and archaeological exhibition on the Queen Arwa and Belqis of Yemen.

At the festival, the Museum administration talked about the ancient civilization of Yemen and presented an overview of humanitarian and cultural heritage left by Yemen, including the legend of the Bilqis story. They also spoke about the rule of Queen Arwa, which exceeded the area of Yemen to extend to large parts of the Arabian Peninsula.

To the admiration of the audience the magnificent painting of the Queen Arwa, painted by the artist Muhammad Abdrab Lahsoon drew great attention. The museum had chosen the Painting of Queen Arwa to be the festival’s main painting along the Yemeni collections in the museum wing.

“Queen Arwa cemented the glory of Yemen and ruled large parts of the world like India, Bahrain, Mecca , Oman, indicating that the historical role of the Queen Arwa was very great,” Lahsoon said to BBC.

According to Lahsoon, Queen Arwa had a great wealth estimated at 17 thousand kg of gold which she gave away to schools and to Al-Mustansiriah Caliph of Egypt.

“This painting is called belonging. It took two years and we worked with some researchers and professionals. Some of us have repeatedly traveled to Yemen to discuss and assist in providing pictures for Yemen that enabled the composition of the painting that we offer today,” Lisa Parkis, of the project coordinator, said to BBC.

“We had a lot of visitors today. It was well attended and I expect to see more visitors,” said Klara Morgan, the director of the museum social history.

Abdul Malek al-Eryani, Deputy Ambassador of the Yemeni Embassy in Britain, said there had been impressions [about Yemen] before but they changed after the exhibition.

Queen Arwa (1048–1138) was a long-reigning ruler of Yemen. She ruled Yemen from 1067 until her death in 1138.
