A 19 year-old young Yemeni artist were recently discovered as she lays out hundreds of her latest jewelry designs, all unique, all handcrafted. Ibtihal, Yemen’s new talent explained that all her creations were careful thought about before being brought to life, adding that she keenly used different shapes and materials as she wanted to set herself away from others accessory-makers.
“I always wanted my accessories to be unique”, she said.
She uses small, delicate and smooth materials in making her accessories in order to make them more similar to real jewelry pieces. Ibtihal who just graduated from High School told the Yemen Observer that it was the encouraging words of her parents which gave her the courage and will to pursue her dream and overcome obstacles.
In the future, this young woman wishes to become a famous jewelry designer, working her craft on an international level.
“Unfortunately, it is hard to find a market for such accessories since the money factor remains an issue,” she said. “It is hard for people to appreciate each and every unique piece of accessories design with money being a problem”, she added. She also complained about the lack of materials needed to make the accessories.
Ibtihal was quick to point out that many artists like her were struggling to make a name for themselves in such difficult economic times, stressing that more support and limelight was needed for Yemen’s talent to bloom. Her father who attended the interview was the one who from the get go cheered his daughter on, willing her to be successful in her endeavor.
“This talent of hers is a gift from Allah, and when a girl is talented she should be helped; I guess she will make great works in future.” According to Ibtihall, all the pieces she made have a special value to her heart. “Every piece I make, I put some of my personality and mood in it,” said Ibtihal. She also added “I do not draw a primary design for any piece;
I just go with flow, trying to see where my imagination would carry me.” Ibtihal has started her hobby a year ago when she graduated from high school and felt board of staying home without doing anything.
“I had nothing else to do then. I just graduated and I have to wait for a year before going to the University,” said Ibtihal.
During this year, Ibtihal started making her own accessories, and then her sister challenged her to imitate a famous accessories design published on a magazine.
“I had to do it, and it was so identical and very smooth, my sister liked it and encouraged me to do more, but I always like to do my own designs that reflects my own personality,” Ibtihal uses different materials in making her accessories, including fabric, crystal, tungsten-like metals as well as small materials.
She also hopes that she would design jewelries under international companies such as Lazurde Gold, the company famous for its gold designs.
