The federal alternative and the national dialogue of Yemen

When the former President of Yemen’s south Ali Nasser Mohammed insists on talking over the two projects- (1) Disengagement and Restoration of the South State, and (2) Federalization of the Country: South/North- that allegedly depends on the justice of the “Southern Cause”, such a talk, in fact, eliminates the justice of the southern cause, and doesn’t support it in any way.

What’s more, the first project annihilates the cause and turns it from a national and political cause into a secessionist and separatist one, and therefore an elimination of the Country’s Unity.

How can a person by virtue of a higher position and great experience like Ali Nasser Mohammed, who is rather a centrist, keeps always raisingand emphasizing the choice of federalizing the two regions - north and south - and the establishment of a Federal State, as the exit to a best solution for the southern cause that will provide security and stability in Yemen and the region. In that case, imagine how could be the opinion of those extremists whose discourse has neither a beginning nor an end! It’s obvious that Ali Nasser’s talks, which were published on Mareb press, come as a reply and a provision to the call of the National Dialogue Committee.

And how can we call it a national dialogue when there is a member talking about “south and north”, and restoring the south state, the southerners’ cause, as well as the principle ofreconciliation andtolerance of the south. Moreover, that member has repeatedly affirmed that the Gulf Deal is meant just for the north part of Yemen.

So, will there be a comprehensive and successful national dialogue while such statements, assertions, provisions, pressures and confirmations are drastically dominating in the southerners’ minds?  The most shocking thing is that he calls for representing the southerners and their cause, while there is no clear definition of this southern cause.

The more they talk about it, the more obscure it becomes, and consequently the rebellious obsessions steep deeply, and the sectarian craze comes to the surface. Apart from that, nowadays we hear about the Hadhrami cause which is another different thing altogether, yet, connected, in a way or another, to the southern cause, for there is a proposal of federalizing the country into three states: Northern, Southern, and Hadhrami.  ----------- * Abdulfattah al-Batool: Yemeni freelance journalist * Source: Marebpress
