‘O. A.’ graduated two years ago from Sana’a University, Faculty of Arts. He was late to finish his certificate because he also worked in a private company. He decided to give his papers to someone he knows and give him the necessary expenses to complete the process of getting the university certificate.
Two weeks later, he tried to contact his friend to discover the latest news about his certificate, but his friend did not answer. He tried to contact other friends to see if they knew something about him, but even so, he failed to catch him. He hopes to find the man and just get back his papers even without money.
Many students who cannot get a real job resort to such kind of thievery, stealing the future of other students who want to live a better life. Devious gangs have begun to appear among students in Sana’a University, taking students’ money in order to complete their university certificate and another papers. They take the money, destroy the papers and disappear, students claimed.
Many students fall in this trap and spend much money hoping to take their certificate in order to go and look for a better job. Some professors are also involved in this network and give hope to students to help them in their process. Most students are involved in many activities and do not have the time to go and complete their papers, so they resort to finding a man who knows every body there and they give him money to complete the process. Sana’a University is full of such men who have experience in robbing people.
Occasionally, these men appear and are active at the beginning and the end of each semester. They trap the beginners and promise them that they will enter in the department they want, demanding large amounts of money for that. “Lies, lies, lies,” repeated the student who was robbed. “My friends told me that I must complete my papers by myself, but I did not believe them.”
Lawyer Abdul-Rahman Barman, the former head of the Yemeni Student Union in Sana’a University, said that many students complain about this problem. “I am afraid this will become a phenomena in all universities,” he said.
“The university security does not take the problem seriously and just cares for other unimportant issues,” Barman said. “Student must be careful with their papers’ process; few students have violations, so they find another way to get their papers out and fall in the trap,” he added.
Anwar al-Hamdani, head of checking and monitoring students at the Yemeni Students Union in the Faculty of Arts branch, confirmed that if they discover any violations committed by students such as robbery acts, they will take strict procedures against them. “We require to the college to stop the thieves from study and from taking exams, and to force them to get back the money,” he added.
Al-Hamdani said that they published a statement addressing the head of the university and the students in order to explain the situation and the punishments.
