The  62nd  Independence Day of India was celebrated at Indian Embassy School on 15th August, 2008. Inequality of rights and disparity of opportunities have caused political and social revolutions. Having found Monarchy and Aristocracy unacceptable, people welcomed democracy which promised political equality. It is certainly a grand deal. George Bernard Shaw called it “a social order aiming at the greatest available welfare for the whole population and not for a class”. All agree that a real democracy must satisfy three conditions – it must aim at the greatest good of the largest number. It must settle differences through discussions and compromise. It must work for the establishment of a classless society. India, being the largest democracy in the world, has satisfied these conditions and playing a very crucial role in the international arena.

The Independence Day of India was celebrated in a very pompous and splendid way at the Indian Embassy School. The National Flag was hoisted by the School Principal Dr. G. Manulal and in his welcome speech he highlighted the two historic events that made this Independence Day very specific and special. One is that the United Nations declared October 2nd, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, as the International Non-Violence Day. The second is the greatest achievement of Mr. Abhinav Bindra who secured the first ever individual Olympic gold medal for India in the ongoing Beijing Olympics. He also pointed out the value of Indian education which can be seen in the fact that a good number of Indians have been working in foreign countries as doctors, scientists, IT experts etc. The chief guest for this grand occasion was Mr. Mohammed Hassan Debwan, the Ex- Asst. Deputy Minister of Republic of Yemen who received the salute from the school children during the disciplined March Past which was acclaimed by one and all. In his Inaugural Speech, the Chief Guest mentioned that India is a role model for other countries especially for its Non-Alignment policy. Mr. Zaid Ali Al-Aaya’a, the Chief Editor, Yemen Observer was invited as the Guest of Honour on this day. The Presidential Address was given by the PTA President Mr.S. Sureshkumar.

On this right occasion, the Annual School Magazine ‘Mirror-2008’ was released by Mr.Thomas Mathew, the PTA Secretary and the President of Pravasi Indian Welfare Association. The felicitation speeches were given by Mr. Pushkaran, President of Kerala Club, Mrs. Ann John, PTA Educational Convener, Mr. Vilvanathan, President of Tamil Sangam & Finance Member, Mrs. Roshni Hari, Karuna Trust, and Miss. Wardah Azeem, Deputy School Pupil Leader.

The Inaugural Address was followed by colourful cultural events presented by the Indian Embassy School students from K.G to STD. XII, which included patriotic songs, action songs and group dances. The programme came to an end with Vote of Thanks from Mr. Amar Kant Jha, SMC member.
