A completely new water laboratory at the Technical Industrial Institute Dahbhan was officially inaugurated by the Ministers of Technical Education and Vocational Training and Water and Environment, on Wednesday, June 4.
It is the first laboratory of its kind at such a vocational training institution. The laboratory is equipped with state of the art testing equipment suitable to train Water Craftsmen and Water Technicians at Dahbhan. In addition, it will allow Dahban to run specialized courses for laboratory technicians and sanitation workers and to provide water testing services to institutional and commercial clients.
The procurement of the equipment from Germany and the rehabilitation of the premises was supported by funding in the range of 30 million Yemeni Ryals through the German Technical Cooperation Agency, GTZ, which runs a comprehensive water sector program in cooperation with the Ministry of Water and Environment, Local Water Supply and Sanitation Corporations, National Water Resource Authority and National Water and Sanitation Authority.
“We are convinced that this water laboratory will make major contribution to increase the national capacities for upgrading the qualification of present and future water technicians and operators,” said Dr. Thomas Engelhardt, GTZ Country Director Yemen.
Ebrahim Omar Hajri, Minister of Technical Education and Vocational Training, said that this laboratory will make a major addition to technical education and vocational training and will help in providing skilled labor to meet the needs of the labor market. He valued the German government’s continued support for development in various fields, especially technical education and vocational training.
Abdul-Rahman Fadhel al-Eryani, Minister of Water and Environment, stated that local institutions for water should allocate part of the training budget to the Technical Industrial Institute Dahbhan to conduct refresher courses for officials from local water institutions to develop their skills and ensure the continued activity of this important laboratory.
He urged the water institutions to heavily recruit graduates of technical and vocational institutes in various fields, especially the water department at Technical Industrial Institute Dahbhan.
The Dean of the Institute, engineer Ahmed Saad Hadi reviewed the various achievements at the Institute. “The project aims at two sectors, technical education and vocational training on one hand and water and environment on the other. The big challenge now is how to use this laboratory, and maintain and preserve it to achieve the desired objectives,’ he said.
This new facility will make a major contribution to improving the quality of water in accordance with internationally recognized standards of health and hygiene.
